5 Tips for Protecting Your Skin After Microneedling
The only way to trigger refreshed skin growth requires introducing controlled damage that jumpstarts the production of new collagen and elastin tissue in your skin’s middle layer. Dermatologist Jennifer A. Baron, MD, recommends the ingenious design of microneedling as a powerful way of revitalizing your skin naturally.
Using a tool with tiny needles that make discreet micro-injuries, microneedling creates a natural healing cascade while causing minimal damage to the skin’s outer layers. These tiny punctures trigger the natural production of refreshed skin tissue.
Circulation in the treatment area immediately responds, and new tissue forms in the weeks after your session. As well as overall skin tone, microneedling reduces the appearance of sun damage, fine lines, acne scars, and more. A series of treatments at five-week intervals produces the most dramatic results.
5 tips for protecting your skin after microneedling
To make the most of your microneedling sessions, effective aftercare is crucial. Today, we’ve gathered five tips to maximize the benefits of your treatment while protecting your skin through periods of new tissue growth.
You’re an active participant in the procedure. Consider these points and discuss them with Dr. Baron so that you know how best to care for your skin after this powerful aesthetic skin therapy.
Expect the red
It’s normal for your skin to appear flushed and red, evidence of the micro-injuries created by the microneedling roller. You can expect signs of redness from 24 to 48 hours after your appointment.
You may also experience signs of swelling and exfoliation by-products, such as flakes and peeling skin. Inflammation subsides in a day or two while flaking may last a little longer.
Sun protection
Your treated skin and new tissue are now more sensitive to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light. Minimize your time in the sun for two weeks after your microneedling session. After 24 hours, be diligent with sunscreen, using it as directed and reapplying frequently.
Reduce infection risk
While microneedling is a gentle, minimally invasive treatment, it still pierces the skin, increasing your risk of experiencing infection. Protect yourself by washing your hands before you touch your face. Skip swimming pools, saunas, and heavy exertion that causes you to sweat for three days after your appointment.
Cleansing and moisturizing
We’ll recommend appropriate products to clean and moisturize your skin in the days following your microneedling appointment. Use mild and natural products for the first few days after treatment to minimize additional skin irritation.
Moisturizing also helps to protect your skin. Ask us about Dr. Baron’s line of skin care products and which may be the best for your skin as you recover. Dr. Baron’s formulas are manufactured to her specifications, with no fragrances or other unnecessary ingredients.
Avoid scrubs, peels, and additional exfoliation
Microneedling needs time to work its magic. Stop using products designed to exfoliate your skin, including alpha hydroxy acids, glycolic acid, retinol, or vitamin C. We recommend taking a few days off from these products if they’re part of your daily routine.
