Photofacial Q & A
What is a photofacial?
BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy utilizes high-energy pulsed light to safetly treat multiple skin complexions for a number of different issues, including:
- Acne
- Sun spots
- Age spots
- Rosacea
- Birthmarks
- Broken blood vessels
- and many others
Because of the heat generated by the high energy light, every treatment also provides a collagen toning benefit. Your skin will achieve an overall tightening and, if you decide on a maintenance routine of one treatment every 6 months, you will notice a "Forever Young" effect. Collagen is an essential protein necessary for healthy, youthful-looking skin. As you age, your body slows down its production of the protein, which results in wrinkles, fine lines, and slack skin.
By directing visible and infrared light energy into the deeper tissues of your skin, Dr. Baron can allow your skin to increase collagen production, resulting decreased skin laxity, disappearance of fine lines and better jawline and neck definition. Your skin looks and feels like a younger version of itself.
What happens during photofacial treatments?
During a photofacial treatment, you can expect to recline on comfortable treatment chair wearing protective goggles and prepared with numbing cream and cooling gel. Dr. Baron uses the hand piece to gently deliver light energy into your skin. She will adjust the wavelength of the energy to treat your skin type.
The light energy passes through without cutting or damaging any part of your skin and reaches its target pigment or vessel. Dr. Baron can use BBL technology to treat dark spots and other issues anywhere on your body (i.e. chest, arms, hands) and face.
Dr. Baron can treat many skin discolorations in just one session. Depending on the location and size of the treatment area, your procedure may only last a few minutes and requires no downtime. The target pigment will darken in the first week or weeks, then disappear. No disruption of the skin's surface will occur, so you will be able to cover areas with clothing or tinted creams if you would like.
How long do the results of photofacials last?
Many conditions treated by BBL improve within weeks to months after your treatment. Some discoloration, especially, redness and vessels, may need multiple treatments to reach your desired outcome.
Dr. Baron can determine if you need maintenance treatments based on your skin type and goals. She often recommends a series of photofacial sessions over the course of several months to help you achieve optimal results. You may also benefit from maintenance treatments once or twice a year to retain your skin’s healthy appearance.
