Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy in Hair Restoration

Hereditary factors, hormone changes, physical and emotional stressors, certain medications, diseases and other causes can lead to hair loss.  Over many years, much research in the medical community has been focused on prevention of hair loss and restoration and stimulation of new hair growth.  Dr. Baron is trained and experienced in several hair restoration modalities, ranging from medical to surgical procedures (hair transplantation), and has become one of the few physician-surgeons in the Silicon Valley area who is qualified to perform PRP, a breakthrough treatment for hair loss.  She approaches each case by assessing all potential hair loss factors, then carefully formulates a hair-restoration plan which may include a combination of systemic and topical therapies as well as the beneficial effects of PRP.  She performs PRP therapy for hair restoration as a safe and highly effective therapeutic option for male and female patients experiencing hair loss. PRP is an innovative, non-invasive option that utilizes the natural healing process of cell renewal, making this a safe and unique approach to hair restoration.

How Does PRP Work?

Human blood contains stem cells and growth factors that stimulate healing and renewal of several components of the skin appendages and anatomy, including hair follicles and collagen. For more than two decades, international medical literature confirms the safety and utility of PRP therapy in several fields, including hair restoration, wound healing, oral surgery, neurosurgery, dermatology and aesthetic surgery (i.e. acne scars, sun damaged skin, wrinkles), sports medicine and orthopedics.

How Is The Procedure Performed?

Dr. Baron, also experienced in phlebotomy and laboratory science since 1996, draws samples of blood from the patient and spins these in a centrifuge in her lab/clinic.  The process is virtually pain-free, and measures are taken to maintain comfort, including regional anesthetics and warm compresses to increase scalp circulation.  She then separates the activated platelet-rich plasma and injects this into the scalp.  The procedure is repeated approximately 6 weeks later, and then semi-annually if desired.  New hair growth is usually seen within 3 - 4 months, a similar outcome time-frame as with surgical hair transplantation.  These results are optimized when combined with topical and oral therapy to reduce hair shedding while the new hair is restored.

Treasure Your Skin!

Many of us who live in the sunny Bay Area and/or have spent a lifetime enjoying the outdoors can agree that our skin is an amazing organ, tolerating such abuses as ultraviolet radiation, smog and tobacco smoke, just to name a few.  Our skin should be applauded for its resilience!  Like any other organ, we must maintain our skin’s health so that it can continue to provide protection from the elements and can remain healthy and vibrant for years to come.  In addition to environmental protection and cancer prevention, keeping our skin healthy promotes happiness, self-confidence, interpersonal relationships, even career success.

Can We Reverse Damage Already Done?

In addition to sun-related and biologic skin aging, some of us have also suffered from dry or sensitive skin, acne with scarring, hormone changes with dyspigmentation, or rosacea with broken capillaries.  Fortunately, there are several non-aggressive and non-surgical treatments available that can be tailored to our specific needs.  Also, there are physician-grade skincare products that can help significantly in maintaining skin health.

Effective Ways To Promote Skin Health

Jennifer Baron, MD, FAAD, FACMS is a board-certified dermatologist with extensive experience in many facets of skin health and rejuvenation, ranging from research and knowledge of effective skincare products to removal of skin cancers from the face and body.  She has specialized fellowship training from the American College of Mohs Surgery and has trained both dermatologists and plastic surgeons at the university hospital faculty-level.  She has also penned numerous peer-reviewed journal articles ranging in topics from management of “moles” in transplant patients to methods for improving the appearance of acne scars.

Dr. Baron will carefully examine your skin for both medical and cosmetic dermatologic concerns.  With her extensive training and expertise, she will not allow a pre-cancerous growth or full-blown skin malignancy to go by unnoticed!  She will review with you good skin care practices that will tailor to your specific needs.  She will go over the pros and cons of the treatments that she offers and give you a range of treatment options.  If she feels you would benefit from a treatment or procedure she does not perform herself, she will give you the names of qualified specialists in the area whom she trusts and recommends.

Regular Skin Examinations for Skin Cancer Prevention & Surveillance

As with other aspects of health and longetivity, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  This cannot be more true of dermatology, especially in terms of skin cancer prevention and treatment of photoaging.  Dr. Baron is first and foremost a medical and surgical dermatologist and is board-certified by the American Academy of Dermatology.  She completed her residency at the Oregon Health Sciences University, known nationally for its strong surgical dermatology training and NIH-funded dermatologic research.  She regularly attends academic conferences and keeps up-to-date on all important dermatologic and general medical topics.  She enjoys educating her patients during the skin exam visit on good skin care, lesion surveillance, sun protection, and more.  She considers the doctor-patient conversation a vital part of the visit since skin health education is a very powerful tool that should be shared with everyone.

Eyelid Surgery for Reducing “Hooding” or Heaviness of Upper Lids

For effective and long-lasting improvement of heavy upper lids, blepharoplasty or “eyelid tuck” is a one-hour surgical procedure performed by Dr. Baron and other skilled and experienced dermatologic surgeons, ophthalmologists and plastic surgeons.  Healing time is relatively quick and stitches can be removed in 5 – 6 days.  Wound care is simple and swelling and bruising are the most common post-surgical events.  Results can be dramatic and extremely gratifying.  Dr. Baron trained under plastic surgeons during her intensive fellowship following residency.  She has performed over 600 blepharoplasties since that time and considers this procedure one of her personal favorites.
Microneedling With Platelet-Rich Plasma

Skin Microneedling (also called Collagen Induction Therapy, "CIT") is a procedure that involves precise delivery of tiny needle pricks to the skin that stimulate collagen renewal and remodeling in the dermis. "Micro-injuries" are made that induce a natural wound healing response which releases growth factors and stimulates production of new collagen and elastin fibers to naturally rejuvenate the skin. Microneedling is a very effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, rosacea, scars, stretch marks, thin skin density, lax skin, hair restoration, sun damage, hyper-pigmentation and hypo-pigmentation.

Dr. Baron first trained one-on-one in microneedling during a medical aesthetic preceptorship in Melbourne, Australia with Dr. Greg Goodman in 2005.  She co-authored and published three pioneering articles on acne scar assessment, treatments and skin rejuvenation (the Goodman Baron Grading Scale) in the world's major dermatology medical journals on these topics. These articles established guidelines for acne scar assessment and treatment plan options that have become universally accepted and referenced by medical journals over 150 times for more than a decade. She has continued to advance her treatment techniques and pre- and post-treatment skincare regimens so that her patients can enjoy the maximum benefits of skin renewal, scar reduction, and collagen remodelling.

Microneedling "down-time" is minimal (1 - 2 days of possible crusting or mild peeling) and topical anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure to maintain comfort during the procedure.  We also use and recommend our jbSKIN hydrating skin serum and ultra-hydrating moisturizer during and after treatment.

Botox® and Dermal Fillers

Botox® for Reduction in Appearance of Fine Lines and Wrinkles, Prevention of Deep “Fixed” Lines

By far the most popular and safest non-invasive treatment for decreasing frown lines, crows’ feet and bunny lines (nose).  In the year 2003 there were over two million Botox® injections performed in North America, and increasing numbers of treatments have been performed every year since then.  Scientifically, this means we have a huge source of data to show that the procedure is safe and effective.  Ideally, the treatment can be done before the deep “fixed” frown and forehead lines set in so as to keep the skin smooth and healthy while still allowing for natural facial expression.

Radiesse for Restoration of Mid-Face Volume, a "Reset" to a More Youthful Face

Several dermal fillers have been developed since the early use of fat transfer and collagen injection were used for restoration of youthful cheek and facial volume.  We are fortunate that the technology has become so advanced that filler substances have become safer and more long-lasting, meaning the natural-appearing results from one treatment can be enjoyed for up to 1 – 2 years in some cases.
